Located in the southwest of Europe, Portugal’s architecture is pluralistic, site-specific and thoughtful. The country is filled with breathtaking landscapes and historical sites, while its heritage architecture reflects its complex colonial history and various cultural encounters. Specifically, when walking the streets of Lisbon, one will encounter influences from Moorish, Roman and Goan cultures (to name a few).

And while Portugal’s well-preserved cities remain impressive, its modernist scene is also a cause for excitement. Emerging from the Escola de Porto (now the School of Architecture at the University of Porto) were some of the most influential contributors to modernism. No three designers epitomize Portuguese modernism more than Fernando Távora, Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura. Then, there’s the playful design of the Paula Rego Museum and the spatially attuned Piscinas de Marés.

Today’s architects continue to champion the ethos of the Escola de Porto through innovative volumetric forms that embrace minimalism. The aesthetic sensibilities expressed by Portuguese architects are extremely powerful yet very basic. Portuguese modernism is void of frivolous embellishments and unnecessary ornament, and perhaps that is why so many find themselves drawn to it.

With so many architecture firms to choose from, it’s challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in Portugal based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge.

How are these architecture firms ranked?

The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firm’s level of architectural excellence. The following metrics have been accumulated to establish each architecture firm’s ranking, in order of priority:

  • The number of A+Awards won (2013 to 2026)
  • The number of A+Awards finalists (2013 to 2026)
  • The number of projects selected as “Project of the Day” (2009 to 2026)
  • The number of projects selected as “Featured Project” (2009 to 2026)
  • The number of projects uploaded to Architizer (2009 to 2026)

Each of these metrics is explained in more detail at the foot of this article. This ranking list will be updated annually, taking into account new achievements of Portugal architecture firms throughout the year.

Without further ado, here are the 30 best architecture firms in Portugal:

Diogo Aguiar Studio is a Portuguese architecture studio that was established in Porto in 2016. The studio operates across the fields of Art and Architecture, designing small buildings and interiors, as well as temporary or fixed spatial installations destined for the public space, with the belief that a dual practice informs and boosts the work undertaken, as a speculative and spatial investigation. Its interests lie in the material and sensorial exploration of immersive architectural or artistic spaces, whether archetypal or ready-made, through geometric, abstract and elementary compositions, which present themselves as formal systems aware of the simultaneous experience of (a space’s) emptiness, seeking to reclaim the relevance of the shaping of space in Architecture.

In recent years, the practice has been awarded several nominations for international prizes, namely: Prémis FAD 2018, BigMat Prize 2019, Europe 40 under 40 Prize, Mies van der Rohe Prize 2022, among others.

Our architecture doesn’t follow a lexicon or a stabilized language. In every new project, we try to find the “vocables” for a specific language for the new context. More than searching for common points between each new project and the previous, our interest focuses more on finding differences. It is as if we were always returning to zero. And, at a certain level, that is our conception of innovation.

Evidently, this approach also opens up a vast research field. Not having to work within rigid precepts, we search for an experimental path where we can test new concepts starting from what interests and fascinates us.

Based in Braga (Portugal) and São Paulo (Brazil), Carvalho Araújo’s studio is committed to the search and reflection of different approaches in the fields of architecture, product design and creative direction, trying to combine the design practice with a more strategic view. The projects and products Carvalho Araújo are characterized by elegance and a formal containment attitude, emphasizing the quality of design, proportions and materials. The design is no reason for exhibitionism, but rather a perfectly rational and simultaneously poetic act.

Both in architecture and in the design fields, rather than respond to a specific program or application, it is important for us to question the problems from a formal and strategic point of view, either in the market and (in the case of architectural projects) its scale, uses and interaction with the place.

We are young architects, living architecture as true teamwork. We believe and invest in multidisciplinary partnerships, as the richest way to achieve better quality architecture. Our project objectives and procedure are based on choices of simplicity and formal clarity, seeking the essence of the constructed object and avowing the elements that may distort or stain its true reading.

Despite these minimalist choices and rejection of excess formal complexity, we give maximum attention to details and to the characterization of our buildings by the implementation of a strong and strategic materiality. We take advantage of cutting-edge technology and its constant inputs to architectural materiality, either through new materials discovered or by transformation or conjugation of existing ones; we experiment with new materials. The architectural design we developed establishes and follows a building history.
